MAUI, HAWAII -- Aloha. I'm Synneve, the great hair guru, and I'm here sharing all of my salon secrets. Deciding to cut fringe is a big decision. Today, I want to teach you how to determine if fringe would look good with your face shape.

Step 1 - Push all of the hair away from your face. If your hair won't stay back, you can use your hand, a clip, or a headband.

Step 2 - Evaluate your recession area and your forehead. This is your recession, if it seems to be receding or your have a lot of wispy, baby hairs growing in on your hairline; fringe would be a good idea for you. If you have a lot of blemishes, or wrinkles on your forehead; you also might want to consider cutting fringe.

Step 3 - Use your forefinger and thumb, start at top and measure the 3 sections of your face. The first section is your forehead area. Place your thumb on your eyebrow and your index finger at your hairline. Take that measurement and without moving your fingers, move your hand to the next section which is from your eyebrows to the tip of your nose. Note if there is a difference in the length of these areas. Next, without moving your fingers again, go to the next section and measure from the tip of your nose to the tip of your chin.

Step 4 - Note if any of these sections are uneven. For example, your forehead section might be longer than the other sections of your face. If so, then fringe would be a good idea for you. Or, your forehead might be shorter than the other sections, in this case use caution when cutting fringe.

Step 5 - The final area of your face to consider is between your hairline and your eyes. If you have a short forehead and this area seems to be small, you might want to avoid cutting fringe. This would close you in too much. It seems to be a safe distance on me, so I know fringe would look great.

Now that you know how to determine if fringe will look good on you, there are couple more decisions to make before you start cutting. Do you want straight across fringe or side angle fringe?
