MAUI, HAWAII — Aloha, I’m Synneve, the great hair guru and I’m here teaching you all of my salon secrets. Today, I want to give you a quiz. Fact or fiction? Everyone needs to shampoo their hair every day.
Actually, that’s a myth. Do you ever wonder why your hair does better on the second day? Shampooing is not one size fits all. Depending on your hair and your hairstyle, you may not need to shampoo every day. Experiment with your hair and it will tell you when it needs to be shampooed.
For fine and thin hair, you’ll want to shampoo more frequently. This will strip your hair of heavy oils that weigh it down. For medium, coarse and dry hair, you’ll want to shampoo less frequently. This will preserve the natural oils to help moisturize your hair, leaving it shiny and healthy.
Here are the steps I recommend when determining how often your hair needs to be shampooed:
Day one – Shampoo and condition as normal.
Day two – For fine and medium hair, keep your hair dry or rinse with just water. Don’t apply shampoo or conditioner. If your hair is dry or coarse and needs moisture, then keep your hair dry or wet your hair with water and apply conditioner.
Day three – If you have fine hair, you get to shampoo and condition. Medium hair needs to be kept dry or rinsed with just water. For dry and coarse hair, keep your hair dry or you can wet it water and use conditioner. Don’t shampoo unless it.s absolutely necessary.
Day four – Fine hair gets to stay dry or rinse it with water. If you have medium hair, shampoo and condition as normal. For dry and coarse hair, keep your hair dry or rinse it with water and condition.
Day five – Shampoo and condition fine hair. Keep medium hair dry or rinse it with water. For dry and coarse hair, you can keep it dry or rinse it with water and condition.
Day six – For fine and medium hair, keep your hair dry or rinse it with water. And for dry, coarse hair, keep your hair dry or rinse it with water and condition.
The next day, start the cycle over with day one.
So to recap, as a general rule, fine hair needs to be shampooed and conditioned about every other day. Medium hair, shampoo and condition every few days. Dry, coarse, frizzy hair, shampoo about once a week and condition every day. If you follow this advice, the health of your hair will significantly change within one week.
I recommend to use this as a guideline; look at your hair and your lifestyle to develop your own shampooing routine. Backing off the shampoo and conditioning more will help the integrity of your hair and save you time and money. Try these shampoo and conditioning tips and have a great hair day.
